I was thinking about the lessons death teaches us this morning. Maybe it’s part of getting older, or maybe it’s social media connecting us so much, but I’ve been seeing a lot of people I knew pass away. Some were people I was close to, and some were just casual acquaintances.

It feels like a lot more than I’m used to. One perspective I got from it is that it made my problems feel less problematic. All of those people can no longer do the things they set out to do. We’re still here. We can still push forward and accomplish the things we want in this short life.

You could also use it as fuel to honor the people you were close to by pursuing greatness in your own life.

Whatever way you look at it, there’s a lesson.

I was having a conversation with my elderly grandparents years ago. I was in my 20s and we were talking about friends and how important the people you keep around you are. The thing I remember the most about that conversation was my grandmother saying that all their friends had died. That they were the last ones alive in their social group. That statement haunted me through my entire life. I’m in my 60s now and was recently updating my contacts. I couldn’t believe how many are deceased. Someday I’ll be someone’s dead friend …or a legend.
