I was having trouble sleeping, so I figured I’d get up and do some reading around 3 a.m. The book we’re reading for the Machine book club is called How to Hold a Cockroach. It’s an easy read and I ended up going through the whole thing from start to finish.
It’s an interesting lesson. One of those concepts we inherently know, but forget to apply. The overall idea I got from it is recognizing where our opinions come from and how, once you’re set in them, you can always find evidence to support them.
If we think something is bad, we’ll find evidence supporting it. If we think the same thing is good, we’ll also find evidence supporting that. The first example in the book was a kid being disgusted by a cockroach. The question is, why does he feel this way? When he was a baby, he was probably indifferent about them, but one day he saw his mom freaking out about one. That instilled the idea that they were gross.
Over the last few years, I’ve been trying a lot harder to audit my beliefs to make sure I actually believe them. Some beliefs we hold onto may not even be our own. Especially now with how social media and their algorithms work. As soon as you stay on a post for long enough, the platform keeps feeding you more of it.
Subconsciously, this can easily shape our beliefs. Once they’re set in, your mind will keep finding evidence to solidify them.
The freedom is in letting go long enough to see if the belief is really yours.

Radicalized by reality
That’s true. Especially for people on the left. Regular people who don’t really pay attention to anything vote for Democrats because the TV, the radio, the phone, the laptop, the billboards, and the dominant cultural narrative told them to. If they are White, they are voting for their own persecution and replacement. They are cheering for it because it makes them feel virtuous. They would rather watch the world burn down around them than go against the dominant culture. They would rather sacrifice their children’s future than face exclusion from the dominant culture. It’s disgusting. These people are scum. Evil. And when the real fighting starts, they are going to be on the side they picked. Because we are going to line them up against the wall right next to the rest of the commies and traitors
