Earlier this week, we talked about discipline and how it beats motivation. Most of us aren’t born with innate discipline, so we need to build it. The best way I know of to build it is with systems and habit stacking.
Systems can be as simple as having specific times you do things. One of mine is I walk my dog around the block every morning. She’s a bit old, so the walk is pretty short. The habit stack is carrying a 53lb kettlebell with me to make it a bit of a workout.
Another habit stack is when I get back from my walk, I always make a cup of coffee. I tied reading to that, so every time I make my coffee, I read while drinking it. Habit stacking is a powerful tool in creating discipline.
Find something you already do every day and try tying a habit to that. Before you know it, you’ll have created a new, positive habit.
