There’s a trend I’ve been noticing on social media with newer graffiti writers asking people to “rate my graff.” They’ll post a photo in the comments on graffiti posts asking people to rate it, or ask questions like “Is this toy?” or something like that.

100% of these that I’ve seen are new or newish writers. It got me thinking. With any skill, in the very beginning, you’re going to suck. We all sucked when we started anything that requires skill. Art, graffiti, music, martial arts; the list is endless. Nobody jumps right in already good.

Sometimes people underestimate how long it takes to start making progress. It could take 500 sketches before your letters start to come together. It could take hundreds of hours of playing an instrument before you start getting good.

In my opinion, there’s really no need to ask if you’re good before you’ve put in way more time than you think is required to even ask that question.

The good news is, most people quit long before putting in that time. Be one of the people who don’t quit, and you won’t have to ask for validation.
