I made some videos for drawing graffiti letters recently, going over starting with the basics. The ideal place to start is with simple letters to get some fundamentals down. From there, you can slowly add more style and detail.
It got me thinking about how this applies to most things in life. We usually want to skip ahead before mastering the basics. But in almost anything, most of the results come from simple stuff done well and done often.
In business, it’s things like talking to customers, making offers, shipping orders on time. In fitness, it’s walking, lifting, eating decent food. In graff, it’s clean, simple letters over and over. None of that is flashy, but that’s where the progress comes from.
There are also studies on habit forming along these lines. Starting small so you can master consistency makes all the difference. Trying to go too hard, too fast with something unsustainable is how getting back in shape, learning an instrument, or building a skill falls apart.
Pick whatever you want to work on and apply this concept. Start small. Master the basics and the consistency. Then see how far you can take it.
