A couple weeks ago I wrote about how motivation comes in waves. Some seasons it’s hard to stop working. Other seasons it feels like you have to force everything.

I’m in one of those second seasons now. Every night, I feel like I need to hit the ground running and get a ton of stuff done. Then I wake up in the morning and really don’t want to do anything. Doing nothing isn’t an option for me for several reasons.

Mainly, I have people depending on me to move my business forward. I also don’t want to go backwards on my health and miss workouts. Lastly, the less I do, the more I stress out about not doing what I need to do.

I’ve accepted that I’m not going to be in a momentum season all the time and these shifts are inevitable. So how do you keep moving forward in a time when doing nothing is all you want to do?

For me, I identify the highest-leverage things and make sure I at least get those done. Walking my dog followed by a short workout right after is enough to keep me from going backwards on my physical health. Then I make a short list of the things that will continue to move the business forward.

All in, I can get all this done relatively quickly instead of a white-knuckle 12-hour day. At the end of the day, if I check all those boxes, I consider it a win.

I’m in the first season. I just got over a season of not being motivated at all now I just keep making more and more music. Sure maybe I take a few days break but usually I’d make 1 song ever 4 months, now I’m making 2 to 4 songs a month. So yes they’re inevitable but Its the way our brains take a break from all the constant ideas they come up with. Glad I know eventually a flows state of creativity will come eventually when I’m all out of motivation.
