I had some thoughts on small changes this morning and thought I’d share them with you. Every morning, I walk my little old dog around the block. To make it a bit of a workout, I carry a 53 lb kettlebell and switch hands from time to time.
Yesterday I was thinking about the walk and how carrying the kettlebell distracts from what’s actually important, which is spending time with my old dog. She’s 15, doing great, but who knows how many more walks I get with her.
The kettlebell makes it hard to focus on time with her. So this morning I decided to do the walk with her and leave the kettlebell at home. Then I did a second walk alone with the kettlebell to get that work in. It’s just a few extra minutes, not a big deal, but how does that extra walk compound?
If it’s about 800 steps to get around the block, that’s 5,600 more steps per week. Around 291,000 more steps per year that I wouldn’t normally take. That alone won’t help me achieve all my fitness goals, but it was an easy adjustment that will add to it.
There are lots of other small changes we can make in our lives that will stack up. One quick drawing per day, 15 more minutes playing the guitar, 30 more minutes with your family.
It all adds up.
