The concept of mental bandwidth came up yesterday. A lot of us spend too much time on our phones, getting hit with information about so many different things that it can become overwhelming. You only have a finite amount of energy to spend each day.
If you’re reacting to everything you see online, you’re spending most, or even all, of that energy. I’m not saying you shouldn’t care about the things you see, but some consideration should be applied.
For me, I try to stay focused on a few things I feel like I have control over. First, I focus on making myself the best version I can be. If we’re a better version of ourselves, we have more to give. Second, I focus on what positive energy I can put into my community and my team.
Those two things alone can move the needle more than a lot of the things that consume our attention. Think about it like this: the best version of you sets a better example for others. Putting positive energy into your community can spread.
Every person you inspire can go on to inspire someone else. This is part of what The Tipping Point illustrates. Change doesn’t always start with a massive audience. Sometimes it starts with one person choosing to focus their energy on something useful, then influencing the people around them.
You may not be able to change everything happening in the world. But you can change what you bring to it.
