A powerful habit tool is the idea of a winning streak.

Jerry Seinfeld had something he called “Don’t Break the Chain.” He wanted to write jokes every day. Every day he wrote, he’d put an X on the calendar. After a few days in a row, the streak itself became the motivation. You just don’t want to break it.

I’ve seen the same thing with my own habits. Once you stack enough days, it starts to feel non‑negotiable. The last thing you want is to miss.

The flip side is, if you do miss one, it becomes easier to miss another.

Right now I have a few streaks going. On Friday, after 37 days in a row, I completely forgot one. Then I missed Saturday too.

The real mistake wasn’t missing Friday. It was missing the next day.

I should’ve jumped right back in.

So here’s the rule I’m reminding myself of, and maybe it helps you too:

Use streaks to keep you going, but don’t let a broken streak be your excuse to quit. If you miss one, don’t miss two.

Break the chain if you have to. Just don’t let it stay broken.
