We talked about the inner voice battle last week and I wanted to follow up on it.

I’m still beating the inner voice more days than not, and it’s getting quieter. That’s good, but it also got me thinking about complacency and how we need to stay diligent.

An important lesson I learned from my friend Kub before he passed is your inner demons will always be there, even when you’re winning. He said something like, “Mine is always back there doing jumping jacks waiting for me to slip.”

Even when they’re quiet and you feel like you have it handled, they’re still back there somewhere, ready to pounce.

Kub knew that better than most. He was doing the work every day to keep addiction at bay. He stayed positive, showed love to people, and kept pushing. But sometimes all it takes is one moment at the wrong time, and that’s what took him from us.

Most of us aren’t dealing with addiction at that level, but the same kind of inner voice can still derail you. It might not cost you everything in a single moment, but it can quietly chip away at you as years go by.

It’s been about six years since he passed, but his lessons and positivity are still with a lot of people. I think about that “jumping jacks” line all the time.

Stay the course. Beat the demons every day and as Kub always said, “Stay Up”
